I hope you will agree with me when I say that women are the stronger sex. What with the monthly hormonal changes, childbirth, the seamless ability to juggle, work, family, and responsibilities at home, We are all worthy to be called Queens. Let’s not forget the countless contributions of women to the betterment of humanity. Whether by deeds, ideas or products, we have proven time and again that our capabilities are limitless. Yet despite these, we also have to face the fact that women, despite our strong spirit and conviction, can be prone to biological maladies. Too bad we aren’t immune to such problems. According to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Department of Health (DOH), the top 5 most common diseases among Filipino women are Neoplasms, Ischaemic Heart Diseases, Pneumonia, Cerebrovascular Diseases, and Diabetes Mellitus*.
Most of these are lifestyle health problems which means, although not all the time, the affliction may have been brought about by the way live and how we take care of our body. Let’s go through them briefly.
5 Most Common Diseases Among Filipino Women
Neoplasms
Neoplasms or Cancer tops the chart. An estimate of 3 out of 100 Filipinos will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The statistics is scary. Not just for the patient but also for the families of the afflicted. Any form of cancer sucks because it may drastically change the quality of human life and it can be fatal especially when detected too late.
Depending on location, neoplasm symptoms can include weight loss, loss of appetite, discomfort or pain among others.
Ischaemic Heart Diseases
Also known as coronary heart failure or the silent killer, this happens when coronary arteries are blocked by plaque buildup. This blockage can lead to a heart attack and heart failure. Symptoms may include palpitations, dizziness, fainting, and cardiac arrest.
Pneumonia
Pneumonia poses a significant threat to Filipino women . This highly contagious disease usually affects those with weak immune systems and the virus/bacteria can spread in a number of ways, through blood or via droplets from coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include fever, chest pains, coughing with phlegm, and difficulty in breathing.
Cerebrovascular Diseases
Cerebrovascular disease refers to a group of conditions affecting the blood vessels and the blood supply to the brain. This can either be blood vessel blockage, blood clot or blood vessel rupture. Symptoms include “droopy face”, inability to raise arm over the head, and speech difficulty.
Diabetes Mellitus
Insulin deficiency – A genetic and lifestyle disease that affects more than 6% of the female population of the country*. Symptoms include sudden weight loss, frequent urination, ketones in the urine, fatigue, among others
What can you do to protect yourself?
Proper diet is essential in keeping your body healthy so it can do its job in fighting these diseases. Eat more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods.
Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are also very important. People with obesity may encounter more health complications and are at risk for other chronic diseases.
Get vaccinated. Get annual flu shots and ask about the HPV vaccine and how it can help protect you against some types of cancer.
Live a healthier lifestyle and avoid smoking and drinking. Cigarettes and alcoholic drinks do not just damage your body but it compromises your body’s ability to heal itself thus multiplying health problems.
Regular Check up. Early detection is key. Choose a trusted health care provider and dedicated physicians that considers your health their PRIME priority. A medical expert can give you proper health advice depending on your current health status.
